Detox is the flavor of the season. In years past when we hear the word detox, it is often referred to a drug addict’s attempt to go clean. Now it’s a term used for any and everyone to clear themselves of toxins of any kind. From the environment (jobs, neighborhood), to the foods we eat and even to the people we interact with. It seems like these days a detoxification of life is necessary for us to be the best person we can be.
A couple of weeks ago I’ve made the decision to stop wearing commercial deodorant after finding 2 lumps under my left arm. Although they did go away, it scared me a bit. With Cancer being an inherited disease in my family (almost every relative I know, including both my parents, has been diagnosed with some form of it), I no longer want to use deodorants or antiperspirants that contains Aluminum Chlorohydrate or Aluminium-Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrate (usually the first thing you see when you read the label) for it has been linked.
I’ve started researching and came across a simple detox method that can help ween me from commercial to natural deodorant (which I’ll also be making myself). The great thing is, it only has 3 ingredients (courtesy of wellnessmama.com)
- 2 TBsp Bentonite Clay
- 2 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar
- 2 tsp water (filtered ok; distilled preferred)
In a 4oz. container (non-metal…preferably a mason jar or small plastic container). Combine all ingredients and mix well until you get a yogurt-like consistency (add a little more water if needed)
Apply an even layer on each (freshly washed) armpit and leave on for 5 – 20 minutes. Rinse in the shower or with warm water on a washcloth.
For best results do this once a day for a week. Start the first day for 5 minutes then increasing each day by 2 minutes.
As an option, you can apply lemon juice (straight from the lemon…organic preferred but not mandated) to reduce odor or just go au naturale until morning and apply the natural deodorant. Over the course of the detox, you should experience little to no odor.
The purpose of the underarm mask is to draw out metallic toxins (aluminum) and buildup. It will allow the natural deodorant to be more effective if you choose to go that route. If you choose to keep with the conventional deodorant/antiperspirant you love, the same result will occur. My only advice is to use this detox method more often to rid of the toxic buildup.
Now…What is Bentonite Clay and where can you get it?
Bentonite Clay is a highly effective clay that is well known for centuries for it’s detoxing properties. it’s used as a face, foot and hair mask. Many even ingest it (I won’t). You can purchase Bentonite clay at any health food store or vitamin store. I get mine from Rocky Mountain Oil Company. The price is right…many of their products are organic and they ship for free. Check out their store on eBay
As with any detox, this takes time…results may vary and many will experience a change faster than others. If you are serious about detoxing and going natural as I am don’t give up.
There are many natural deodorant options out on the market. However, if you want to make your own I will share my recipe in my next DIY segment.
